At Wake-Style I’ve tested a huge amount of foils over the years, but the SABFOIL Blackbird Razor 977 genuinely stood out. I’ve ridden it in multiple conditions — wingfoil freeride, and even small-bump downwind — and this new Razor left us seriously impressed.
If you’ve used earlier SABFOIL Razor versions (Razor and Razor Pro), you’ll immediately feel the shared DNA.
But the new Blackbird Razor elevates everything: smoother, more stable, more refined, and now designed around SABFOIL’s integrated fuselage system.
Here is my full hands-on review.
My very first Downwindsession on the SABFOIL Razor 977 was actually in light wind.
Already from the very beginning of the paddle-up, I immediately felt how much glide and efficiency this foil delivers. The lift comes on early, the acceleration is smooth, and the foil just keeps carrying speed without forcing anything.
Within seconds I was already linking bump after bump into the next sections effortlessly — the Razor 977 simply made everything feel easier and more predictable.
👉 The SABFOIL Razor 977 glides effortlessly and pumps with a spring-loaded sensation.
There’s a softness, a smoothness, and an effortless flow that’s rare even among modern high-performance foils. The integrated fuselage plays a huge role here — instead of going ultra-thin like many brands (titanium mini-fuselages, etc.), SABFOIL has gone the opposite direction:
This gives the Razor 977 its signature riding feel:
extremely stable pitch
clean, dampened feedback
forgiving roll
smooth pumping
predictable turns
excellent recovery when breaching the tips
It’s honestly one of the most relaxed yet efficient foils we’ve tested.
Older SABFOIL setups used T6 or T8 mast connections, which sometimes limited compatibility.
With the Blackbird Razor, everything changes:
No adaptors.
No compatibility worry.
Just bolt it on and ride.
Although the fuselage is integrated, SABFOIL gives you flexibility:
you can still swap stabilizers, and there’s an optional “fuse piece” allowing you to mount older SABFOIL stabs or even third-party tails.
This is the most flexible Razor system ever made.
The Razor 977 pumps effortlessly.
That fuselage-generated lift gives a subtle spring effect that helps you keep rhythm, especially on flatwater dock starts.
It rolls beautifully and handles rail-to-rail transitions with a lot of predictability.
If you breach a tip, the foil recovers in a surprisingly forgiving way — a huge advantage for intermediate riders.
With a maximum thickness of 16.7 mm, the Razor 977 isn’t built for pure top speed like some ultra-thin HA foils.
But what you do get is:
great average speed
stable cruising
efficiency on bumps
a foil that keeps you on your feet
During one of our downwinds we actually ended up ahead of riders on Code and Axis, not because the Razor is faster, but because:
👉 it’s easier to hold lines smoothly and avoid mistakes.
Super easy for tacks, gybes and transitions.
Its early lift and stability make it ideal for light wind wing foiling.
Perfect for small, rolling waves.
The glide is fantastic and the stability helps you stay connected to the energy of the wave.
Ideal for small to medium bumps.
The Razor 977 tracks cleanly and absorbs rider error better than most HA foils.
This is the most versatile Razor ever made.
And honestly:
It’s not demanding.
It’s incredibly smooth.
It forgives mistakes.
And it keeps you in the energy for a long time.
Perfect for:
wingfoil freeride
small-wave foil surf
bump riding / downwind
dock-start pumping
light-wind sessions
riders wanting one do-it-all foil
If you're looking for a foil that maximizes fun and minimizes stress, this is it.
Huge upgrade.
Far smoother, thinner, lighter, and more refined.
More subtle but noticeable:
smoother
slightly lighter
stiffer
cleaner glide
If you chase small performance gains or want a more modern feel, it’s worth upgrading.
We tested mainly with the SABFOIL 375 tail:
very stable
excellent pumping
balanced glide
great for freeride & downwind
Heavier riders or tiny bumps → consider the 1077 front wing.
More performance → the 847.
High performance. More speed. Tighter carving.
The perfect all-round daily driver.
Small waves, prone, light wind, downwind.
For heavier riders or pure glide / downwind missions.
The SABFOIL Blackbird Razor 977 is one of the smoothest, easiest and most enjoyable foils we’ve tested this year.
If you want a foil that:
✔ pumps well
✔ turns predictably
✔ forgives mistakes
✔ works for wing, prone, downwind and dock start
✔ has tons of glide
✔ feels stable
…the Razor 977 is a top-tier choice.
Wake-Style fully recommends it.

Code 1130S vs Duotone Glide 1100 – Which Foil Fits Your Style?
We tested the Code 1130S and Duotone Glide 1100 back-to-back in identical conditions to see how they perform. Both foils hit the same average speed, but the feeling on the water is very different:
Code 1130S → lively, surfy, and rewarding for experienced riders
Duotone Glide 1100 → stable, forgiving, and confidence-inspiring
Both are excellent foils, but designed for different riding styles. Check out the full comparison with GPS data, split tables, and in-depth impressions on our blog.
