is one of the most versatile wingfoil and foil spots on the Markermeer. Located between Almere and Lelystad, it is easy to reach, accessible throughout the year and offers free parking directly beside the water.

The partially enclosed harbour creates a large area of sheltered, flat water. Outside the harbour, riders can access the open Markermeer for bumps, swell and longer foil runs.

What Makes Werkhaven Special?

Werkhaven offers two very different riding areas in one location.

Inside the protected harbour, the water remains relatively flat even when the wind becomes stronger. This makes it a good place for beginners and for riders who want controlled conditions to practise starts, transitions and foil control.

More experienced riders can head outside onto the Markermeer for open-water wingfoiling, parawing and bump riding.

A clean, rideable swell also forms near the harbour entrance. This creates a fun area for practising turns and linking small waves, even when the local wind is relatively light.

Wind and Best Conditions

Werkhaven works with winds from the south, through the western and northern quadrants, up to north-east.

The usable directions are south, south-west, west, north-west, north and north-east.

East and south-east are not suitable wind directions for this spot.

The protected section is particularly useful on stronger-wind days, while the open Markermeer offers more swell and bumps for experienced foil riders.

Water Conditions

The water inside Werkhaven is generally sheltered and flat, creating forgiving conditions for learning and making stronger-wind sessions more manageable.

Near the harbour entrance, the water develops more shape and a clean swell line can form. Outside the harbour, the conditions become fully exposed to the Markermeer, with open-water bumps suitable for wingfoil, parawing and downwind-style riding.

Aquatic plants and weed are normally not a problem at Werkhaven, making it a reliable hydrofoil spot throughout the year.

Access and Launching

The recommended entry and exit point is the concrete boat ramp next to the parking area.

Anti-slip mats have been installed on the ramp, but the surface can still be slippery. Take extra care when entering or leaving the water while carrying your foil.

The water around the launch area is shallow enough to stand. If you need to exit away from the ramp, you can also climb out over the concrete blocks along the sides.

Water shoes or wetsuit boots are recommended for less experienced riders to protect their feet around the ramp and concrete blocks.

Parking and Facilities

Parking is free and available directly beside the water, making it easy to unload and prepare your wingfoil equipment.

There are no toilets, changing rooms, showers or other facilities at Werkhaven. Arrive self-sufficient and bring everything you need for your session.

Safety

There are no major fixed obstacles in the normal riding area.

Boats can enter and leave the harbour, although traffic is usually very limited. Always use common sense, keep the harbour entrance clear and give boats plenty of space.

Maintain a safe distance from the lock gates. The lock is located in a heavily wind-shadowed area and is not normally part of the riding zone, but riders should still know where it is and avoid drifting towards it.

Once you leave the harbour, you are entering the open Markermeer. Conditions can become considerably more demanding, and the consequences of equipment failure or changing weather are greater. Only head outside when your ability and the forecast are suitable.

Keep the boat ramp and harbour entrance clear, respect other water users and take all rubbish home with you.

If you want to work on your turns, use the swell near the harbour entrance. When you are ready for longer bumps, head outside onto the Markermeer—but only with the right experience and safety preparation.
