Wind Directions and Water Conditions

Muiden works with winds from the east, north and west. The spot normally offers completely flat water, making it an excellent location for beginners who want to practise their first flights, improve their board control or work on transitions.

With a northerly wind, the conditions become especially interesting. Excellent waves can form, giving more experienced wingfoilers the opportunity to practise wave riding while still having access to flatter sections of water.

This combination of flat water and quality waves makes Muiden suitable for a wide range of levels and riding styles.

Suitable for Beginners and Experienced Riders

Beginners will appreciate the easy sandy launch, the flat-water conditions and the absence of significant underwater hazards. The sandy bottom also makes entering and leaving the water relatively comfortable.

Experienced riders can enjoy the more dynamic conditions created by northerly winds, when the spot produces fantastic waves for a more playful and technical wingfoil session.

Launch, Parking and Access

Access to the water is straightforward. You launch directly from a sandy beach, and the bottom close to the shore is also sandy.

Parking is available on the grass directly behind the dike. From the parking area, it is only around 50 metres to the beach, so carrying your board, foil and wing is quick and easy.

Safety and Recommended Equipment

There are no particular hazards in the water, and the sandy bottom makes this a relatively accessible launch. Nevertheless, wearing water shoes or protective booties is always recommended.

As at every wingfoil spot, check the weather forecast, wind strength and local water conditions before launching. Beginners should remain close to the shore and choose conditions that match their experience level.

Important: Aquatic Vegetation from June

The biggest disadvantage of Muiden is the heavy growth of aquatic plants during the warmer months. Similar to Marina Muiderzand, the spot becomes heavily affected by vegetation from approximately June onwards.

The plants can catch around the foil, making normal wingfoiling extremely difficult or impossible. During this period, Muiden should generally be considered unsuitable for foiling. It is therefore advisable to check the latest local conditions before travelling to the spot.

Final Verdict

Muiden is a fantastic wingfoil location when the water is free from vegetation. It combines an easy sandy launch, nearby parking, flat water for learning and progression, and quality waves with northerly winds.

Outside the summer weed season, it is a highly recommended spot for both beginners and experienced wingfoilers.

Check the Wind at the Spot

To estimate the wind strength at this spot, compare the wind readings from Pampus Island, on the southern side of the Markermeer, with those from Trintelhaven, farther north.

The actual wind at the spot will normally be somewhere between these two readings. For the most realistic estimate, pay particular attention to the gust speed rather than relying only on the average wind speed. By comparing the gusts recorded at Pampus Island and Trintelhaven, you can get a useful indication of how strong the wind is likely to be at the spot.

Wind conditions can vary locally and change quickly. Use these readings as a practical indication, and always assess the conditions directly at the spot before entering the water.
